Emergency Preparedness and Response

Emergency Preparedness and Response in Child Care is a free or low cost training now offered in NC. The goal of the training is to significantly improve the safety of children in child care centers and homes during emergency situations.

Participants will learn to:

  • Plan for emergencies.
  • Prepare the facility, staff members, children and families for possible emergencies.
  • Practice emergency plans.
  • Respond to protect children and staff members.
  • Recover from the emergency by helping children and staff members cope with their feelings, get needed medical care and make necessary repairs.

They will practice problem-solving skills, learn to assess risks and respond appropriately. They will learn the value of submitting a summary of their emergency plan to the local emergency management office. They will learn how to evacuate both on and off site, and how to shelter in place. By the end of the training they will be skilled at preparing for common emergencies.

This low or no-cost training has two parts. The first is a workshop that introduces emergencies and evacuation procedures. The second part is a series of assignments for the participants to complete at their facility. Participants will receive step-by-step instructions in how to plan, prepare, practice, respond and recover from emergencies.

They will receive An Emergency Quick Guide and a Parent Brochure. Each can be customized to use with individual programs. When the training work is completed, participants will have a comprehensive Emergency Plan for their facility. 4.5 child care credit hours are awarded for each part of the training. A total of 9 child care credit hours are awarded for completing both parts.
